Employed in one of five R&D centers of Rhodia all over the world, the thesis deals with studying the behavior and dynamics of water movement within porous media using real and model systems. The goal is to acquire an increased understanding on the various processes (evaporation, drainage, root absorption and growth) involving water in soil in order to develop potential additives that consequentially increase the amount of water within the soil to be absorbed by the plants. This thesis is part of a project that aims to answer the real challenging problems posed by water conservation.

I investigate the reactions of oxidation of methionine containing peptides due to its important role in protein structure. After many years of research on this fundamental topic, there are many unsolved problems. The results are usefull for more complicated systems such as big proteins. The methionine moiety was found in Prion protein and others biologically important proteins. The sulfur contained in Met may be easyly oxidised by interactions with radiation (gamma, X-ray, UV) and by photosensitization. Im working in group which cooperetes with many different groups in France, USA or Germany. This allows me to do experiments in different laboratories and work with interesting people. We are also the part of European Cooperation in Science and Technology, COST CM0603 concentrated on free radiacls in chemical biology.

Brief description of the thesis: The thesis deals with studying and understanding the behavior of solvated electrons in Supercritical water (376°C, 221 bar) by the means of picosecond pulsed radiolysis. This study will provide information regarding the fast kinetics taking place within supercricritical water (showing different characteristics from water such as: density < 100 Kg.m-3, dielectric constant ~2), especially for the following reactions:
e-s + H+ –> H
e-s + .OH –> OH-
e-s +e-s –> H2

Moreover, this study aims to answer some key issues encountered in the society such as the increasing demand on energy (where supercritical water is supposed to be the moderator for the fourth generation nuclear reactors) as well as fuel / organic compounds reprocessing.

Thesis Director: Sandrine Lacombe, PhD
Thesis subject :
Toxicité et effets radiosensibilisants des nanoparticules dans l’ADN et les bactéries.
Subject Abstract:

The number of applications based on the use of nanoparticles and quantum dots are rapidly increasing. For examples, metal NP (gold for instance) are proposed for medical purposes (nanomedicine and cancertherapy), quantum dots such as TiO2 are used as good catalysts, additionally, quantum dots enhance also the activity and expand the usable portion of the solar spectrum and silver nanoparticles are powerful bactericidal.
In the field of nanomedicine, gold and platinum NP are proposed as alternative agents to target and improve the radiotherapy protocols. In the field of the environment, the impact of nanoparticles on biosystems (in particular bacteria relative to the ecosystem) is also a major concern.
Altogether the direct effects at molecular level (studies on dry DNA), the radical effects on DNA (investigated on DNA in solution) and the effects at cellular scale (cell death) must be investigated to have a broad understanding.

By looking at the world’s energy scenario there is need to find an alternative source of energy to fulfil its growing demand. Artificial Photosynthesis involving four electron oxidation of water is a promising source of green fuel (i.e. Hydrogen)

2 H2O   —hv—->    O2 + 4 H+ + 4 e-

In order to drive this reaction there is a need of suitable catalyst. My thesis deals with the synthesis and characterization of such catalysts for the light driven oxidation of water (water splitting). In all, it is a bio-inspired approach to find the solution for everlasting problem arose in front of the entire human race.
